Summary: Flushwork is a wholly external decorative medium, and so it is an artistic achievement that can be viewed whether or not a church is open, and with a large number displaying some form of flushwork, there is a rich field of study. Surprisingly however, it has not in the past attracted the same depth of research and analysis as other aspects of church architecture. Conceived as a companion work to the authors Flint Architecture of East Anglia this book provides a wider perspective of the several different modes of Flushwork that were identified in that book. By elucidating the various strands of the art and showing how they have been used on buildings, the purpose of this book is to encourage a greater understanding and wider appreciation of this relatively uncharted branch of church art, with a hope that it may also inspire sympathetic restoration of those flushwork motifs and inscriptions that have lost their flint infillings.
