Your book purchases and continued business
is helping to make a difference in
archaeological research in West Norfolk.
At Heritage Marketing and Publications we firmly believe in putting
finance back into archaeological research in our local area. We
have
recently set up a research project looking at the archaeology and
history along the Upper Nar Valley in Norfolk.
The project has the full support and co-operation of the Norfolk
Museum Service and Norfolk Landscape Archaeology. While the project
is undertaken to high professional standards and supported
by involvement from professional and amateur
archaeologists. All excavation,
fieldwalking and metal detecting assemblages
together with all other material artifacts have been agreed to be
donated to the Norfolk Museum Service by the
landowner. All excavation work undertaken
has a full excavation/project design submitted to Norfolk Landscape
Archaeology for their approval before work begins.
The project is directed by Michael de Bootman, director of Heritage
Marketing and Publications together with John Shepherd, Institute of
Archaeology, University College London. Every Summer a group of
around fifteen people excavate for a period of two weeks, while in
the winter months we fieldwalk and conduct other
archaeological survey work.
We have invested in top-end equipment
including a twin-probe resistivity meter
and recently also purchased a Bartington 601 Dual Gradiometer, (for
more details see below) which has enhanced our geophysical
capability. We also have access to a ground-penetrating
radar. We have tried to make the project nearly totally
self-efficient in terms of equipment.
We are working with a very important and rich archaeological and
historical landscape, and while we cannot discuss the exact location
of the sites on this website for obvious reasons, below are images
and a brief discussion on
some of the work we have recently
conducted.
At the present time, this project has not been
set up as a formal community/research project with a hierarchy of
personnel. Around twenty people are currently involved in the
project from the local community and further a field; however,
during 2006 we will probably be formulating the project a little
more.

With
the recent purchase of a Bartington 601 dual Gradiometer, Heritage
Marketing and Publications is soon to promote and
conduct
what may amount to one of the largest landscape magnetometer surveys
in the country in the Nar Valley, West Norfolk. There have already
been five seasons of resistance survey and selective fieldwalking
and excavation, supported by Heritage Marketing
and Publications in the valley revealing a complex pattern
of settlement from the Bronze Age to the present.
With the
experience and results from this survey, and as part of its core
strategy, Heritage Marketing and Publications
will be working with local authorities and other archaeologists in
East Anglia to survey (free-of-charge), for research purposes, key
sites that deserve much better understanding i.e.the Roman Fort at Brancaster.
We will
also consider commercial work with this equipment, at hugely
competitive prices on development sites. Any
income generated from this type of work will help support further
sponsorship of field projects in West Norfolk. If
you are a commercial unit and want a professional magnetometer
survey conducted, that may not have been feasible before due to
cost, then please contact
us. Because this is not our core business, you may be pleasantly
surprised.
